Active faulting controls bedform development on a deep-water fan

چکیده
Abstract Tectonically controlled topography influences deep-water sedimentary systems. Using 3-D seismic reflection data from the Levant Basin, eastern Mediterranean Sea, we investigate spatial and temporal evolution of bedforms on a fan cut by an active normal fault. In footwall, comprises cyclic steps antidunes along its axial external portions, respectively, which interpret to result variation in flow velocity due loss confinement at canyon mouth. Conversely, hanging wall, seafloor is nearly featureless scale. Numerical modeling turbidity currents shows that fault triggers hydraulic jump suppresses downstream, thus explains lack visible basinward. This study generated faulting controls downslope associated geomorphology can be used evince syn-tectonic deposition.

Controls on fan development - evidence from fan morphometry and sedimentology; Sierra Nevada, SE Spain
We have studied the morphology and the morphometric relations between alluvial fans and drainage basins in a bajada system including more than 20 coalescent fans developed since the Late Pleistocene as a result of the recent uplift of the Sierra Nevada (Betic Cordillera, Spain). Three allocycles of tectonic origin were recognised across which there is a clear evolution from debris flow to sheet...
متن کاملControls on alluvial fan long - profi les
Water and debris fl ows exiting confi ned valleys have a tendency to deposit sediment on steep fans. On alluvial fans where water transport of gravel predominates, channel slopes tend to decrease downfan from ~0.10–0.04 to ~0.01 across wide ranges of climate and tectonism. Some have argued that this pattern refl ects grain-size fi ning downfan such that higher threshold slopes are required just...
متن کاملActive control of fan noise on a UHB engine
The model developed in this work was used to investigate the potential that active noise control techniques have for reducing fan noise on an ultra high bypass (UHB) turbofan engine. Active noise control is expected to perform differently on a UHB turbofan engine than on a conventional turbofan engine since the short and wide inlet duct inherent to the UHB engine promotes radiation from evanesc...
متن کاملThe pervasive role of biological cohesion in bedform development
Sediment fluxes in aquatic environments are crucially dependent on bedform dynamics. However, sediment-flux predictions rely almost completely on clean-sand studies, despite most environments being composed of mixtures of non-cohesive sands, physically cohesive muds and biologically cohesive extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) generated by microorganisms. EPS associated with surficial biof...
متن کاملIn Situ Stress and Active Faulting in Oklahoma
Appreciable injection-induced seismicity has been occurring in northcentral Oklahoma since 2009. To better understand these earthquakes, we have compiled new information on the state of stress in the state to compare it with both mapped faults and faults inferred from earthquake epicenters and focal plane mechanisms. Seventy-five new in situ stress orientations are available from wellbores thro...
